在温度22～30℃、相对湿度60%～80%的条件下，蛹经过3天发育，蛹体由软变硬、由黄变棕红色，再变为黑褐色有光泽。蛹壳破裂、羽化成虫，经1小时后开始吃食、饮水、飞翔。3～5天后性成熟，雌雄蝇交配产卵。1只雌蝇每次产卵100～200粒，每对家蝇一年内可繁殖10～20代，按生物学统计测算可产1亿～2亿个后代。成蝇一般喜欢白天在室外活动，偶尔飞入室内，善飞行。夜间多栖息于树上或室内天花板上，气温低时喜集在温暖的地方。蝇类喜食甜的瓜果、植物汁液、发酵产物，更贪食新鲜人畜粪便及腥臭物质；幼虫主要孳生在人畜粪便堆、垃圾、物质中，取食粪便及腐烂物质，也有的生活于动物尸体中。幼虫老熟后潜入茅厕及粪坑附近的土表下化蛹，以蛹越冬，越冬蛹在土中深度可达10厘米左右。蝇类在一般地区，一年可繁殖10代以上，在温暖地区可达20代以上。在终年温暖地区，家蝇的孳生可终不绝，但在寒冷的冬季，则以蛹期越冬。成蝇6～8月为盛发期，苍蝇性成熟后6～8日龄为产卵高峰期，以后逐日下降，到15日龄失去繁殖力。雌蝇一生的产卵期为12天，可产卵1500粒。
